Alkrington Primary School

A Learning Journey

Design and technology is a valuable, inspiring and practical subject, it prepares our children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world.  Using creativity and imagination, it encourages our children to become independent, creative problem solvers. Design and technology enables the children to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products and systems. Through the study of design and technology, the children combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as purpose and industry enterprise.

Our intention is to develop children and young people’s practical designing and making ability, allowing the children to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology, it's uses and impacts.

The progression of skills and knowledge within design and technology, throughout each year group and throughout the primary phase as a whole, is detailed in the link below. In order for children to receive a high-quality design and technology education, it is essential that teachers build on previous curriculum content to ensure the skills and knowledge being taught are progressive and based on a secure foundation where acquisition of new content can be formed.
