A Learning Journey

Art

Learning through and about art enriches the experience of learning. Art offers children many benefits and transferrable life skills such as self-expression, increased visual thinking and observation skills, as well as developing problem-solving and analytical skills. It supports self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. Art encourages a sense of autonomy that isn’t always accessible through other subjects. These benefits come both from practicing art and from learning about it.

We intend to equip our children with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. To enthuse and inspire by allowing the children the opportunity to engage with a variety of art forms and nurture their artistic talent. Good teaching in art lights the fires of interest in children, promoting a commitment to learn and express oneself. It develops a deeper level of understanding about how art is reflected in history, our lives and the world in which we live.

For each of the threshold concepts three milestones, each containing the knowledge the children need to understand the threshold concepts, provides a progression model. The detail included in these plans can be seen by clicking on the milestone links below:

Milestone 1 (Y1 & Y2)
